Rabbit Lover's Tea Party 2009

Each December brings one of my favorite events of the year: The Rabbit Lover's Tea Party! A fellow rabbit lover and friend, Jan Gasber, hosts this annual event in her beautiful home. This year the decorations fell nothing short of a winter wonderland! Fellow rabbit lovers gathered to exchange a rabbit themed gift, enjoy an outstanding spread of food and tea, and caught up on the past year. Each of the guests wander throughout Jan's magnificently decorated home, taking pictures, getting ideas, and just plain admiring it!

Although some of us don't see each other but this one time a year, it's a testament to the camaraderie amongst fellow rabbit lovers. Something about this animal touches each and every soul who is lucky enough to care for one, or more! There are bonds of rescue that will never be broken for some, and bonds of encouragement over the loss of a dear rabbit for others. Most have at one time or another answered a call for help in bonding a pair or more! Rabbit lovers tend to have rabbit decor in our homes and even personalized license plates (and clearly very understanding husbands!). Certainly a tea party with rabbits as a theme is a mere requirement before the end of each year! All in all, it's as though the joy of a rabbit cannot be contained, it bounds and multiplies...well, like rabbits!

I hope you enJOY getting a glimpse inside Jan's home once again this year. I know I did!

I was asked to bring my homemade scones so I couldn't resist making one in the shape of a rabbit head. This year's flavors were Raspberry and Blueberry Lemon.

Let it SNOW!

In the usual fashion, I began decorating early for Christmas...say, the week before Thanksgiving. And as usual, the decorations evolve until December 25th, sometimes after. Okay, I admit it: I love my house decorated for Christmas! This year snow has been on my mind, and appropriately so since most of Northern California enjoyed a winter coating of it last night.

Those of you who know me also know about my love affair with glitter. I've looked for something new to glitter since I learned of it's existence. This year I made indoor snow! Like the majority, I'm watching my budget and I didn't want to spend money on decorations that would be back in the garage in a month or two. So I went on a shopping spree in my house. I had an old pillow with a down-like filling that I decided would be much more appreciated as snow then as a pillow (always beauty before function). First I made tufts of snow and placed them on the tree. Then, after the glitter-bug bit, I decided they most certainly needed some sparkle. As the day progressed, more decorations had a new coat of homespun, sparkling snow. (Click on pictures to enlarge.)

Unfortunately the real stuff disappeared at our house, but the indoor snow will last through the season!

A topiary on the mantel received a "dusting" of snow as well.

Spruce and pine cones are added to the white rose bouquets.

A wall vase placed under my Grandma's china.

My dad helped me cut manzanita branches for my decorating. I placed them in my chandelier for a winter effect.

Vegetable Tortilla Soup

You can use as much canned/frozen or as much fresh ingredients as you like, depending on your time frame. Adjust quantities to your liking or the size group you're feeding.

Chop & Saute:
-----------------
1 zucchini
1 yellow squash
1 red bell pepper
1 green bell pepper
1/2 yellow onion
2 cloves garlic (or less if you like)

Add above to large soup pot

Add to Pot:
------------------
2 large cans enchilada sauce
2 cans chicken broth
1 can fire roasted diced tomatoes
1 can corn
1 can black beans
1 can pinto beans
1 can sliced olives
1 cup salsa, medium
tortilla chips or tortillas, torn or sliced

Bring to a low boil, then simmer on low for about 30 minutes. Serve with a little sour cream on top if you like. I like to add the Santa Fe Tortilla Strips found in the produce dept. to the top.
Add chicken and make it even hardier. Enjoy! Stay tuned for another recipe using these leftovers!

I am getting ready for the upcoming Folsom Gourd & Arts Festival! The event is held at Folsom City Park, September 26-27. Click on the link above for more information!

This will be my first year attending this event and I'm working hard to make it successful! Carrot Creek will be presenting it's floral design line "fun K designs" featuring beautiful floral works of art created by Elizabeth Krohn. I wanted to incorporate her topiaries and wreaths into Carrot Creek Boutique because they add texture and a sense of nature that I strive to achieve in my paintings. Her designs compliment my art perfectly! I am happy to display them all over my home and now to offer them to you.

I am framing several pieces of art for sale and also offering unframed prints. Of course I will have note cards to purchase as well as special "holiday" packages you can send to loved ones over the upcoming holidays. So "hop" on by and say hello! We'll see you there!

I've been busier than I ever expected to be with our 7 month old Border Collie and now I'm getting ready for our wonderful friends from PARIS, FRANCE to come visit for the summer! I've had to put painting on hold awhile, but I will be back at it soon enough.

I am also hoping to stop in and post some of our pictures of our "Summer of Fun, Part Deux" as I like to call it. We had such a great time with them last summer that we know it will again be a blast this year.

In Observance

I decided to take a drive within a few miles of our house to observe what is the beginning of Spring. Even though I have lived in this area my entire life, I am endlessly delighted in the surroundings this time of year. During my drive, I noticed how many cars were speeding along, passing me at times, in such a hurry to arrive at their destinations. Did this beauty pass by them without notice? Surely it was they that passed up the beauty. What a shame that is. I think because I am an artist and novice photographer, it goes without saying that I am an observer. I am always looking for a subject to capture whether to store in my mind or on a canvas someday or simply in a photo album. Sometimes to a fault. When I observe, I must remember to also be a participant. Slowing down, looking not through the camera, but with my senses. Smelling a flower, feeling the wind, or sun and just being in the moment. I know we all have our places to be, but I hope these images inspire you to slow down and observe what is before us and make an effort to wholly enjoy it.

The rolling green hills that evoke such calm and peace during Springtime in California. The oak trees are beginning to leaf out and absolutely glow in the sunlight.

Fields of wildflowers are unfolding before me.

Even the brush has a purple hue.

I turned onto a side road off of a bridge to see this stream rolling by.

This tree holds a treasure.

I love the texture of the rocks embedded in the hillside. They are so beautiful to me. The oaks cast the most magnificent shadows where the grass appears greener and more lush, perfect for a picnic.

The bright purple flowers were everywhere.

This oak, standing alone was so captivating. Symbolize it how you will, but for me strength in solidarity is beautiful.

This is perhaps a perfect landscape. I love the rolling grass and the oaks with their contrasting shadows. It just doesn't get much better than this.

I wonder how many locomotive engineers were able to enjoy this splendor. They had the road to themselves and landscape strewn all around them, without the temptation of "passing" other cars. How fortunate.

A Season of Growth

While Carrot Creek is growing with the new design line, fun K designs, our new puppy McKenna is too. She is such a delight. I must admit, I am sentimental for the 4.5 pound version of her. So fluffy and tiny! We'll truly love the dog she will have become at full size; better trained and no biting!
What an appropriate time for growing pains...Spring. It seems everything all around is awaiting the burst of blooms and the new season of growth. And although it may seem so, I know it doesn't happen overnight. The regeneration of the earth this time of year never ceases to amaze me. It's a perfect process.
So whatever growing pains you may be experiencing, whether a new puppy, children, or business, I hope you persevere and reach your full potential. I know the perfection will be worth it.

If you think I have a hard time making my mind up, you're right. I had a great time creating all the banners and logos, but this is the winner. The continuity of the Carrot Creek brand is clear and it just feels more like "me" with one of my paintings as the background. But, never get too comfortable...you know how I like changing things around! The creative mind is never truly at rest.

Fickle!

Being the creative soul that I am, I can be fickle. Especially with my designs. I have changed my banner (for now) for fun K designs to match my logo and feel more "Parisian". Since I fell in love with all things Paris last year, it seemed appropriate. The colors remind me of being in a famous cafe and bakery, Angelina. I also love the shape and elegance of the fleur-de-lis and have always incorporated into my home decor. Now I can be reminded of it every time I see it. I also wanted it to "match" my logo design. Let me know what you think!

Handmade Gifts & Designs For Your Life

fun-K Designs is a tiny little division of Carrot Creek Boutique. I am the Owner/Artist and now Creative Director/Designer/Manufacturer (ha!) of this great endeavor.

After being told by friends and family for years, "You should sell these!", I am finally doing it. I've created fun-K Designs not only because I happen to think that I am fun, and my first initial is K, but because I have felt a strong need too express another passion; decorating and design. I love it! If I can't glue, sew, sticker, decoupage, or glitter something during the week, I am just miserable! And when I'm not doing that, I'm designing my websites and graphics (among other things!).

I think you will like my creations as much as I do and will share them with friends and family. There's nothing better than an original, one of a kind, handmade gift or design! If you need an item gift wrapped, please let me know..I love doing that as well!

Valentine's Day Tea

I was so happy to be able to host a few friends of mine for a Valentine's Day Tea. I gathered inspiration flipping through my recipe books, tea and decor magazines (one of my favorite things to do!). Once I spotted ribbon that reminded me of chocolate, my "theme" became apparent. I decided that brown and pink would be my colors and away I went. I tried to make most menu items have a valentine theme, whether there was a red ingredient in it or shaped like a heart. It was so much fun! As one of my friends put it, "I love that you're getting a lot of mileage out of this!" She is absolutely right! Of course my main goal is to make my guests feel special and have a great time. But can I help it if I don't thoroughly enjoy myself? Of course not!

Following are photos of the event! Enjoy!

I made the napkins and placemats by sewing two coordinating fabrics together. The favors ( heart shaped measuring spoons with sweet sayings on them) are wrapped in beautiful scrapbook paper that resembles chocolate. No scrap was wasted. I used them for the invitations, place cards, and even curled the tiny pieces around a dowel to make faux chocolate curls sprinkled on the table.

I hung thick, wired ribbon that was spiral-curled down from the chandelier. Then I strung thin pink ribbon resembling frosting from arm to arm. I added heart ornaments and crystals. The lights each got a bow tied around them.

Strawberry and Toffee Almond Salad served with balsamic vinaigrette and sprinkled with feta cheese. Mmm!

Rabbit Lover's Tea 2008

Once again my dear friend Jan held her annual "Rabbit Lover's Tea" Christmas party. This year it was held at "An Afternoon to Remember", an exquisite tea room in Newcastle, California (a short drive from Sacramento). We exchanged our rabbit themed gifts while enjoying remarkable food and service. For many of us this treasured event kicks off the "fun" in our holiday seasons. It is so nice to catch up and visit with those we may only see this one time each year. And what a wonderful place to do it! Please enjoy the photos of this charming tea room. Amy, the owner and her staff really roll out the red carpet to make sure you truly do have an afternoon to remember. Thank you!

Dazzling Decorating Ideas - Bunny Proof!

Merry Christmas! I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season so far. As many rabbit owners know, putting up a tree is a challenge with furry critters running around. We gave up on a "real" tree some years ago. Our bunny Scout would climb into the branches and feast away. After we bought our first fake tree, we found that the bunnies still held high interest. They would try to eat the tree, only to spit it out after realizing the high quality of "fake" trees being manufactured today. It even fools them. So, dancing and prancing around the tree skirt they would go, hopping all the way...and leaving "presents" behind. The new problem. After tiring of cleaning a tree skirt daily, we found the "perfect" tree. It's in an urn, over a foot off the ground and out of the bunnies reach! The cord is covered in a silky-fabric cord cover I found at Lowe's. We are thrilled with this tree. Who says searching for the perfect tree ends when you buy a fake one?

As for decorating, my "other" passion, I had a lot fun coming up with a new theme for the tree. I wanted it to be dripping with sparkle. I managed to find several different sized icicle ornaments, but I wanted something even more dazzling. A light-bulb came on and I remembered the replacement chandelier crystals from home improvement stores. Perfect! They capture the light beautifully and hang from the hooks that are already on them. I love this idea. I also added them to existing lighting and candle sconces in the room. My house is small, so this was pretty affordable since our tree is technically considered an "Entry Tree". It was a lot of fun and it makes me happy knowing I can disperse the crystals throughout the house even after the holidays are over.

And of course, anything that is "bunny" in my decor gets a little splash of Christmas as well. Even "Spring" rabbits can celebrate the holidays with just a few tiny ornaments.

For some reason, I have this aversion to the color red in my Christmas decorating. I used to love it, perhaps I tired of it. So for now, I stick with creams, greens and whites. I also wanted my every-day decor to still look appropriate for the holidays, so I simply added a few sprigs of frosted greenery to my floral arrangements and displayed ornaments loosely on my mantle. Every day lace curtain panels flow from the mantel and the tops of my bookcases with white lights delicately placed underneath. I try to use what I have whenever possible.

I also love to make a "scene" under a cloche. A few of my favorite ornaments (I like to refer to them as "Dan serenading Kim") made it under this year with a leftover decorative tree from a previous year. I used fake moss for the ground.

Here is my fireplace in the day and at night, where you can see the glow of the lights under the lace.

I am looking forward to dressing up our home for the holidays. I'll be posting some pictures when I do. I found this picture at the Better Homes and Gardens website. They have countless decorating ideas for the holidays (although, their pop-ads to subscribe are a bit annoying).

I love the glow and smell of candles. Although I burn them year round, this is my favorite time to enjoy their scents. There is even a "Fireside" smelling candle I discovered last year. So if you don't have a fireplace, or you're not baking cookies, you're sure to find candles that will give you that ambiance.

As for flowers for your home, don't forget to step outside and see what your yard provides for free! This time of year shrubs are producing berries and trees often have stunning bark that can be trimmed and brought indoors. Just be sure to rinse them off so you don't end up with uninvited critters.

Not only does decorating your home look good, but it makes you feel good by engaging your senses. Turn on soft music, enjoy a great smelling candle, open a window to feel a breeze or hear birds chirping. It's a great way to spend an afternoon.

Rabbit Hill Inn, Vermont

This is a MUST SEE website! I stumbled on a link to "The Rabbit Hill Inn" the other day and have been dreaming of it since. Not only does the website design make you immediately fall in love, but the inn itself is a place to put at the top of your vacation list. The beautiful pictures and slide show at the top of each page are enough to make you tune out the rest of the world. I can't imagine how one must feel being there! And, of course, my favorite touch to the site is the running bunnies when the page first opens.

Balancing Act

It's tough to find a balance between good enough and great. We certainly can't do one or the other all of the time. We need a little of both if you ask me. When I look back at previous years paintings, I often think "why did (or didn't) I do that?" But when I completed the painting, it was good enough for me. Maybe it was my best. I was happy with it. There is some comfort in that. The painting captures my creative spirit in that moment. If I look back and find perfection, I would have nothing to strive for!

I know it seems early, but Thanksgiving is just around the corner (Thursday, November 27th). Our local grocer, Mr. Bayleaf encourages you to put your order in early for parsnips and carrots to ensure a bounty of homemade soups this holiday. Don't forget to order extra to give to the less fortunate. For those of you who may have misplaced your recipe, or perhaps used it for nesting last Spring, here it is:

Carrot and Parsnip Soup

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 1/2 cups yellow onion, chopped

3 cups parsnip, coarsely chopped (about 1 pound)

3 cups water

2 1/2 cups carrot, coarsely chopped (about 1 pound)

Two (14 ounce) cans fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth or vegetable broth

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Heat olive oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onion, and cook 10 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Add chopped parsnip, water, carrot, and broth; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 50 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Remove from heat; let stand 5 minutes.

Place half of carrot mixture in a blender; process until smooth. Pour pureed carrot mixture in a large bowl. Repeat procedure with remaining carrot mixture. Stir in salt and pepper.

It's not by accident that Doris Day is serenading this tune while you read this. My mother actually did sing and say this to me all of the time. What a comforting song, and memory. It's one of those songs that you'll start singing in no time after hearing it. It's nostalgic for me, although it speaks of the future. The words are so simple and true. So easy to digest. If only life were always as easy going as the song, but alas...Que Sera Sera!

Tick, Tock...goes the holiday clock!

I wanted to share this awesome clock my hubby bought me on our visit to Carmel this summer. The whole clock runs backward. It's perfect for how I feel about time when I'm carried away painting. We found it at The White Rabbit, of course.

I have been organizing my blog and "decorating" it. I hope you like the new changes.

I can't wait to finish the FOUR paintings I'm working on. Firstly, Sarai, the darling Beagle. She is almost finished. Then I'll finish up the Christmas themed painting so Christmas cards can be made available! It's getting closer to THAT time again. Of course, before Christmas is Thanksgiving and for that holiday I love Teddy's Harvest card .

Today was a great day with my friend Erin. We drove to apple hill and enjoyed donuts and apple cider. I took some pictures of the area for those of you that have never been.The weather was warm, but pleasant.

Everyone knows my love for dogs and well, if I didn't have five rabbits, I'd have at least one dog. I am painting a commissioned portrait of a beagle named Sarai. She is just beautiful and I hope you come back to see the finished product.

Carrot Creek awaits the blossoms of Spring! The roses are unwrapping themselves and the crepe myrtles are stretching out their limbs, preparing for their flowered finger tips. What a marvelous time!

Lately we've all noticed the birds busily flying around Carrot Creek gathering materials for their nests. Lets all lend a helping hand and donate some of that excess fur that has been building up over the winter. The birds would certainly love luxury bedding for their little ones, and we have plenty! Donations can be dropped off at 123 Cabbage Court where they will be collected and taken to Parsley Park for distribution.

Annual Craft Fair

It's easy to get a little blue when the winter months linger on. Although Carrot Creek has been enjoying lovely weather, some burrows haven't thawed out yet. But don't lose hope. Spring truly is around the corner. And with it brings the annual Spring Craft Fair. Last years knitted beach bags were very popular thanks to Angora Warren. So get your tails in gear and be creative! Nothing keeps the blues at bay like busy bunnies!

"Leap To It"

It's that time again when our Carrot Creek frog friends celebrate LEAP YEAR! Races and a long-jump competition will be held at Parsley Park at noon on Friday, February 29, 2008. Please bring your own picnic lunch, water bottles will be provided. The last time the races were held, Lester Long-Legs won the coveted "Leap Year Leaper" trophy by taking first place in all events. Can he hold the title this year? "Leap" over and find out!

It's Raining Again

The rain is really coming down. Fences were recently replaced in Carrot Creek from the last big storm and hopefully everything will hold up. Next week may bring more sunshine, which I know we're all looking forward to. March is just around the corner and hopefully you've had time to work in your garden before Spring arrives. Until then, keep your hats on and your tails warm.

Spring Is In The Air

The local rabbits of the Creek seem to be restless. With recent warm temperatures and sunny days, most rabbits have been outside preparing their gardens and flower beds for spring. Begonias are a popular favorite. But don't clean out those burrows just yet, it looks like a storm is brewing over head. A nice watering from above is in order to guarantee a great crop!
